The county seat, White River is one of three small towns in Mellette County and the largest with a population of 533 in 2020.

Special events and everyday activities offer entertainment and opportunity. Frontier Days, a full weekend of rodeo action with a parade, Swift Bear Wacipi, and other events, is held annually the second weekend in July. The Ranch Rodeo in August is another event that calls to mind our rich western cowboy history. Countless organizations and clubs offer many chances for social and service opportunities, while nature’s bounty brings prime hunting and fishing, as well as a haven for naturalists in search of the pure beauty of the land.
